human nature

Welcome back to LJ Runway Monday!

Dress Twelve: The four remaining designers on Bravo’s Project Runway visited the New York Botanical Garden, where they were challenged to photograph flora and draw inspiration from nature to design an evening gown.

LJ Runway’s Heidi Gunn issued the same challenge to us. Minus the visit to New York, of course.

Here’s what I created.

About the design: I drew inspiration from a perennial flower called Monarda Bergamo, a lavender Mondarda hybrid that attracts butterflies.

I was mainly inspired by the color and shape of the flowers on its stalk and wanted to incorporate those elements into my gown. I found a silk organza (Thank you, High Fashion!) with a faded lavender to deep purple dye, which I sewed in a tiers with the darkest colors on the bottom and the lighter colors on top, like the flower.

Nikki: Gorgeous. I love this. I would’ve liked silver shoes, though.

Timothy: The bluefly.com accessory wall didn’t provide silver shoes.

Nikki: Oh, well. Doesn’t matter. The dress is still gorgeous.

Timothy: Thank you.

Nikki: You know, I have a dinner thing tomorr–.

Timothy: Fine. Wear it in good health.

Nikki: Thanks!

View my competition: Mark’s design and Becky’s design. See what the judges have to say and voice your opinion about our designs on Heidi Gunn’s LJ.

And now a word from Heidi Gunn: Are you an avid follower of Runway Mondays? Have you ever screamed “NO!!!!” when the judges announced the winner–leaving your favorite designer out in the cold? Which Runway Monday designer was a cut above the rest? Here’s your chance to play judge. Vote now for the contestant you loved most. Today is the last day to vote! The Designer who receives the most votes will win a fabulous surprise. How do you vote? Just send an email to ljrunway@gmail.com to let us know who your favorite designer is, and why. One vote per person please!

Update: The judges have spoken and declared Becky the winner of this challenge. Congratulations, Becky!

  1. Oh, man. I love the cascade of colors from bodice to hem, the delicate fabric, and the bow in the back. Fashion forward, as usual. Good luck!

The layering of the gradations of color is awesome, Timothy.

  3. davidpnyc says:

GORGEOUS color, Tim! The dress looks beautiful on Nikki, even without the silver shoes. :)

  4. markgharris says:

Timothy, you might’ve done the impossible. You used horizontal lines, and Nikki looks sleeker and thinner than ever.

That faded effect… when our final collections debut, you’ll know why I’m sort of laughing/crying right now. : )

For a moment, one of the profile photos made me think you’d actually designed a pink fanny pack for this gown, and I was going to let loose my flying monkeys to dispatch you. Painfully.

    Abei gezundt, Nikki.
